Following news that Uber is going to require passengers and riders to wear masks, Lyft has also changed its ride policy to require passengers and riders alike to wear face coverings. Lyft has taken its policy a step further, however, with a few additional requirements.

Specifically, riders must agree to not ride in the front seat on the vehicle and drivers must agree to keep the windows of their vehicles open whenever possible.

Now, whenever you go to request a ride in Lyft you’ll be asked to confirm that you’re wearing a face mask and you’re not experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. Likewise, drivers will be prompted in the app to confirm they are wearing a face covering before accepting rides and agree to keep their vehicles clean and sanitize their hands frequently.

Lyft has also already temporarily paused shared rides everywhere they were available, so you’ll also only be making that ride with the driver and people you go in with, rather than strangers.

Lyft says that anyone who does not agree to the personal health certification and the new rules via an in-app form, which is rolling out to the app now, will be unable to request a ride or drive with Lyft during this time.

Like Uber, Lyft has also dedicated money to purchasing safety products for drivers. To date, it says it has spent roughly $2.5 million on hundreds of thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer, masks, and disinfectants that have been offered to drivers at no cost.
